Malawi: The President of Malawi has made the Easter celebrations more special for the people of the country, especially the prisoners. Lazarus Chakwera has granted pardon to some of the prisoners serving their respective sentences.
According to the Ministry of Homeland Security, the President has granted a pardon to forty nine prisoners. The gesture was an important part of the Easter Holiday celebration on Saturday, ahead of Easter Sunday.
The pardoning of the prisoners was done in accordance with the Section 89(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi Section 111 of the Prisons Act, and the Guidelines for the Granting of Pardon to Convicted Persons.
The persons who were given a pardon on their sentences included people who had served half of their sentences. Other eligible prisoners were elders and women who had children accompanying them in the prison.
The prisoners who were chronically ill and struggling with some sicknesses were also taken into account for the pardon
The pardon was made as a part of the government’s efforts to show kindness during the easter season. Further, the authorities are also working hard to decongest the prisons of Malawi.
According to the Ministry of Homeland Security, the President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera was happy to give some of the prisoners opportunity to make their lives better. Further, the President also granted a six month relief to all the prisoners.
According to the Ministry, the act was a part of the act of Clemency during easter holiday. Easter is a very important festival in the Christian Calendar and commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The festival serves as an opportunity for the people of the community to pray and celebrate with their families. The event allows them to get in touch with their spirituality.
