Botswana: Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, is expected to arrive in Havana, Cuba, this morning, where he will participate at the Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77 and China, from 15th to 16th September 2023.
At the Summit, which will be held under the theme, “Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation,” Botswana will have the opportunity to contribute towards global solutions that promote technology and innovation as drivers of sustainable development. The G77 represents the interests of 134 developing countries in the United Nations. It advocates for the concerns of developing countries on various global issues.
Whilst the goal of the G-77 is to foster economic cooperation among member states it also facilitates for political discourse on issues of development that concern member states.
The G77 was formed out of a collective desire to bridge the gap that exists between world countries, to advocate for a joint response towards the UN in the face of inequitable distribution of wealth, and to boost economic relations between the North and South.
“The Group of 77 (G-77) was established on 15 June 1964 by seventy-seven developing countries signatories of the “Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries” issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva“.
The Group of 77 is guided by the Charter of Algiers, which acts as its institutional structure.
Other dignitaries will also accompany President Masisi, including the First Lady, Neo Jane Masisi; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Dr. Lemogang Kwape; Minister of Communications, Knowledge and Technology, Thulaganyo Segokgo, the Permanent Secretary to the President, Emmah Peloetletse as well as, Senior Government Officials.
Xi Jinping, the President of the People’s Republic of China, has also received Zambia politicians at the Great Hall of The People in Beijing today.
