Africa: The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) is currently hosting a week-long capacitation programme for public bodies that are responsible for the implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

The EPWP Learning Programme is taking place in Pretoria and is aimed at providing officials from various implementing bodies with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the EPWP.

The aim is also to ensure that these officials are well capacitated to efficiently and effectively implement the EPWP in their respective communities.

The session was opened earlier today by the Deputy Director General of the EPWP, Ms Carmen-Joy Abrahams, who urged the attendees to use this week to learn as much as they can about the program so that they can contribute to the creation of work opportunities for their communities.

“This training will give you an in-depth understanding of the EPWP. It will assist you in coming up with innovative ways to create the much-needed work opportunities in your communities,” she said.

She added that the attendees were part of a very important government initiative whose aim was to lift millions of people out of poverty and provide hope to communities.

DDG Abrahams also used her opening remarks to brief the attendees about the Department’s ongoing work on the formulation of the EPWP Policy.

“We will soon visit your respective provinces to engage communities on the EPWP Policy. We will need community structures to use the opportunity to engage us on this Policy,”

Day one of the EPWP Learning Programme

During today’s session, the Manager: of EPWP National Coordination, Mr Lungisani Dladla, presented a module on the overview of the EPWP (Module 1: Discover the vision Overview of the EPWP).

He explained that the module was aimed at outlining the history of the Public Employment Programmes (PEPs) globally and the birth of the EPWP in South Africa.

“By the end of this capacitation programme on Friday (26 August 2022), you should also be able to grasp a number of key aspects of the EPWP, including the paradigm shift that took place in phases 1 to 4 of the EPWP; provide an overview of the EPWP governance structure, institutional arrangements and the roles and responsibilities assigned to public bodies through protocols and policies,” Dladla explained.

Dladla worked with the Training Manager for EPWP in KwaZulu-Natal – Mr Thabani Mazibuko- to deliver the module.

Officials who are attending the learning programme come from various implementing bodies throughout the country, including municipalities and provincial departments.
