South Africa, KwaZulu Natal, Tongaat CBD: A volley of shots was fired at a member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responding to a robbery in progress at business premises on Gopalall Hurbans Road in the Tongaat CBD – KwaZulu Natal (KZN) a short while ago today on Monday, 18, September 2023.

The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received a call from a member of the public at approximately 09:41 in the morning, reporting an armed robbery in progress at a jewellery store. All available Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched to the location.

A Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Member who was in the vicinity of the callout responded within minutes. As he approached the store, a volley of shots was fired at his vehicle from high calibre weapons. The robbers sped off towards Watson Highway in a silver Toyota Corolla, a silver IX35 and a black VW Polo (registrations unknown).

It was established that approximately nine (9) suspects held up a business premises and stole a large quantity of jewellery. They were in the process of fleeing the scene when the initial RUSA vehicle responded to the call. Nine (9) spent cartridges were recovered at the scene.

A Response Vehicle was shot (picture 2). The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Officer did not sustain any injury. Residents of the area are shocked and thank god that the Reaction Unit Officer, as well as the people of the area, are safe as they didn’t had any injury.

One of the locals said, “Every week, something happens on that Gopalal road. Blessings and prayers for the people of Tongaat and the RUSA officer.”
