Cape Town: National Football team of South Africa ‘Bafana Bafana’ is all set to play their first game in nine years. The DHL Stadium in Cape Town will host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
Team Bafana Bafana will be hoping to shore up qualification for the tournament to be held in Morocco, next year in 2025. The match will be played against South Sudan which is the final game of the six-round qualifying campaign for the continental competition.
Currently, Hugo Broos’ team is on the second place in the qualifying group and is just two points behind the leading team of Uganda.
Reportedly, this will be the first game of the national football team in the Mother City ‘Cape Town’ since their 2-1 win against Angola in an international friendly match, played in 2015.
Considering this, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed that they are thrilled to welcome Bafana Bafana back to Cape Town for their AFCON qualifier against South Sudan on November 19, 2024.
He mentioned that nine years has been far too long without a Bafana Bafana match in the Mother City and they will pull out all the stops to ensure that this is a memorable day for passionate soccer fans of Cape Town.
“I urge Capetonians to come out to support our national team. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m. so let’s all get our tickets early and then turn up in great numbers to support Bafana as they strive to qualify for Morocco 2025” added Mayor Lewis.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that it has been almost a decade since they had a Bafana game in the city, and they want to make it a special and memorable occasion for all.
Smith conveyed that their teams are working with the South African Football Association behind the scenes to finalise plans for the important fixture.
Moreover, the Safety and Security team will be partnering with the event organiser. It will also join SAPS and other stakeholders to put together the logistical and safety plans, which will be an unforgettable return to Cape Town for Bafana Bafana.
“We will make an announcement on those logistical plans once they are finalised,” added JP Smith.
