Saint Lucia DPM delays Fèsten Tanbou amid hurricane threat

The Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Ernest Hilaire, announced the postponement of the Fèsten Tanbou, one of the events in the month-long lineup for Saint Lucia’s Mwa Éwitaj Kwéyòl (Creole Heritage Month)—the announcement aligned with the adverse weather conditions prevalent in the region due to Hurricane Tammy.

The hurricane was expected to bring thunderstorms, hard winds and other adverse weather situations.

In line with this, the organizers decided to postpone the date of celebrating the Fèsten Tanbou. According to the Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, the government consulted the Saint Lucia MET Services. The organization suggested that bad weather, including Flooding and other safety concerns, may be possible.

Accordingly, the people of the country were asked to exercise necessary precautions in the face of Hurricane Tammy. The event was scheduled to be held on October 21, Saturday. However, as a measure to keep the people of the country safe, it was postponed indefinitely.

While announcing the postponement, the Deputy Prime Minister urged the people of the country to remain in touch with the government and authorities. The Caribbean is currently in the middle of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Tropical Storms, Tropical Depressions and Hurricanes most commonly characterize the season.

Such weather can often lead to unexpected flash floodings, landslides and other threats to common safety. During the hurricane season, the people are expected to remain ready to constantly take precautions to protect themselves and their property from harm.

Accordingly, the administrations of the various Caribbean Islands, including St Kitts and Nevis and Dominica, reduced the official and working hours of both the public and the private sector.

This was done to ensure that if and when weather conditions deteriorated due to Hurricane Tammy, the people could be safe in their homes.
