Durbanville Library from the City of Cape Town celebrated and welcomed the first young patron to read 1,000 stories. These stories before School Reading Campaign has been running for more than two years.
Recently, a five-year-old Leandri Roodman became the first young patron to reach the milestone of 1000 stories. Her mother shared that she loves the story time and enjoys to choose her own books. The Parents can sign up their children at any City of Cape Town library.
Considerably, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that the children are never too young to join the library. They can visit or book or can be exposed to books anytime.
According to Ross, reading to the children whether any story or some other knowledgeable thing helps them in building language skills. Once they are able to read on their own, it supports their education, social and cognitive development. It also considered their well-being and mental health.
Patricia Van der Ross further added to her statement, “Well done to Leandri and I hope many more of the young patrons will take on the challenge.”
Last year in May 2023, Durbanville Library joined the esteemed group of City of Cape Town libraries which has completed hundred years. It is an honour to be a part of an elite group of centenarian libraries as Bellville, Observatory, Rondebosch and Simon’s Town libraries highlights the rich literacy and cultural heritage of City of Cape Town.
These libraries have played a vital role in fostering love for reading, knowledge sharing and community engagement, throughout the years.
Referring to this, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that what makes this milestone even more special is that Durbanville is an incredibly popular library which records the highest membership of the City’s 101 libraries and also a satellite library.
Durbanville Library was led by principal librarian Rene Schoombee, who has been transforming young lives in the community through its programme – ‘It Takes a Village to Raise Readers’.
