Southern Province records 12 new cholera cases: Calitus Kayunga

The Ministry of Health in Southern Province has in the last 24 hours recorded twelve new Cholera cases in various districts.

Zambia: The Ministry of Health in Southern Province has, in the last 24 hours, recorded twelve new Cholera cases. Dr Calitus Kayunga, Health Director of the province has shared the update about the cholera crisis in the communities under his charge.

Health Director Doctor Calitus Kayunga said 9 of the cases are from Monze and 3 from Mazabuka.

He explains that most of these cases reported in Monze and Mazabuka districts are imported from Itezhi- tezhi fishing camps. Many districts of the country have been recording an increased number of cholera infections, with Lusaka emerging as the centre of the epidemic.

The administration of the district has taken several steps to combat the spread of the infection. The people of the country have been urged to take necessary precautions to make sure that the people of the community are protected from the outbreak.

The district health officer has talked about the increased number of cases in the province and pointed out the districts and communities that are recording the highest number of infections. The information will help the administration take concrete steps to address the crisis.

Kayunga says the Province has recorded 72 cases cumulatively and 4 deaths with Monze and Mazabuka recording the highest numbers.

He says 10 out of the 15 districts in the Province have reported cases while the other 5 have not yet reported any.

Kayunga adds that 43 patients have been discharged and 27 are currently under care treatment in Monze and Mazabuka.

He further notes that the provincial office has received funding from the National Office which will be used to intensify the fight against Cholera.

Cases of cholera have been recorded in the country since October 2023. The cholera case update was recorded on January 13, and the country has recorded 8724 cases since October. So far, the mortality rate in these cases is four percent.

As per the Zambia Ministry of Healtj, 87% of the cumulative cases that were recorded in the country in the last four months are recovered and healthy.
