Zambia: St Francis Central Hospital had donated a wheelchair to an eight year old girl in Katiula Ward of Katete District. The donation comes days before Christmas and is being hailed a Christmas gift for the vulnerable girl.
The donation was made possible due to the support of Hope and Healing International, and other partner organisations. The officials have shared that the donation was made on Tuesday to help the girl gain more accessibility and ease of movement.
St Francis Central Hospital Physiotherapist Brian Nkhoma talked to the media regarding the importance of the donation effort. He was delighted to note that World Vision Zambia and the Zambia Persons Living with Disabilities (ZAPD) also supported this mandate.
The organization has screened 200 persons living with disabilities in the last two weeks. The majority of these cases are physical disabilities and needs navigation support devices. The authorities have since taken the mandate of support these persons.
Women Economic Empowerment Specialist under the Sustainable Land Restoration project (SLaR) Beatrice Sakala for world vision Zambia also reflected on the project. She has announced that her institution has remained committed to assisting vulnerable groups.
Sakala highlighted that the project led by World Vision Zambia was focused on ensuring natural regeneration of forests. This will be done through Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR).
The organization is working hard to make sure that they can work on reviving the degraded forest land. For this reason, they have been working with farmers and among them are women and persons with disabilities.
The donation was made on the occasion of International Day for People Living with Disabilities. The organization has come up with this project with the simple aim of including the people living with disability.
The organization said that the people living with disabilities are the people who are most affected by climate change. The members of the community are organizing a disability screening and working to include peeople with disabilities in national progress
Dorika Kwenda, who is the mother of the eight-year-old child, has thanked the people who havee supported her child. The mother said that her daughter will be able to go to school and move around easily
Kwenda revealed that she struggled to lift her child while attending to farm work.
The Zambia Agency for Persons with Disability (ZAPD) Provincial Coordinator Chisomo Zulu expressed his pride in making the donation. The persons with disability do not have to hide themselves as they would miss out on opportunities that will help their lives.
