St. Kitts and Nevis has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Global Support and Development (GSD) through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The agreement marks a significant step in enhancing the disaster preparedness and response capacity of the Federation.
This deal is sealed to formalise a partnership between the federation and GSD. GSD is an international non-profit organisation which is dedicated to strengthen national and regional disaster management systems.
With this collaboration, GSD will work alongside the local agencies and civil society groups to improve disaster readiness, response coordination and long-term resilience.
Prime Minister and Minister of National Security – Dr. Terrance Drew signed the MoU at St. Kitts Marriott Resort on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. At the ceremony he emphasised the urgency of preparing for the uncertainties posed by climate change and the importance of such partnerships.
PM Drew said that they do not fully understand what will happen with the rising temperature and climate change conditions. He said they have hope in organisations like GSD, who are dedicated to work with countries like them so that they can be prepared for the uncertainties.
GSD has already made tangible contributions to the Disaster Management Efforts of the Federation. This significantly strengthens communication during disaster response.
Furthermore, GSD will be assisted in the procurement of computers and related equipment, which will enhance NEMA’s capacity to coordinate preparedness and response operations.
CEO of GSD – Dr Michael Court reaffirmed the commitment of organisation to support the national systems and working in partnership with local institutions. He said, at GSD, the goal is to respond quickly and to strengthen the same systems outside of crisis.
This agreement will successfully coordinate, respond and meet the needs of their communities. Their aim is to complement existing systems.
Dr. Court noted that the importance of this partnership with St. Kitts and Nevis recalled that the Federation was among the first countries, where GSD shared its futuristic vision for regional collaboration.
Signing of this MoU underscores the commitment of St. Kitts and Nevis Government to safeguard the people of the nation through stronger disaster risk management and resilience-building strategies.
