Cape Town: Famous Sunnyside Park shines with new look after receiving renovation. The Recreation and Parks Department in association with Edge Church has completed the upgradation work of the park, situated in Edgemead.
Reportedly, the refurbishment work of the Sunnyside Park marks a significant milestone for the local community. Incredible transformation of the park was made possible through a generous R2.7 million donation by the Edge Church, after outlining the donation agreement.
Beyond this, the church went above all, providing the additional support to bring the project to the life. The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town has played a key role by supplying 30 trees, considering Harpephyllum Caffrum, Syzygium Cordatum and Ficus Rubiginosa, along with mulch, a water meter and refurbished play equipment to further enhance the space.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that the Sunnyside Park has always been very popular among the residents and they are delighted with the amazing transformation.
Higham stated that they would like to extend their gratitude to the Edge Church for its contribution to the vital project. She noted that the City of Cape Town is proud to support this upgradation by providing key environmental and infrastructure enhancements.
“We would like to invite residents and families to fully exploit the facility and all it offers, but to also help us in caring for this critical community asset,” added Francine Higham.
The newly upgraded Sunnyside Park consists of various new things to cherish, such as:
- Landscape Berm with shrubs
- 30 additional trees and planted beds
- Safer synthetic grass and rubberised surfacing
- New benches and picnic tables
- Enhancements to the dog park
- Laterite Pathways
- Improved Pedestrian, Cyclist and Vehicle Access
- Upgraded Play Equipment, including Swings, a Wooden Jungle Gym and Rocking Horses
Key features of the upgradation project is the addition of a new public parking area that will assist with traffic flow in surrounding the Streets, especially during Church Services, School drop-offs and Scout Hall Meetings.
Notably, the Church has also joined the ‘Friends’ initiative by the City of Cape Town and has entered into an agreement that aims at assisting with the activation, conservation, maintenance and management of the park.
Considering this, Executive Pastor of Edge Church – Rozanne Hammer said that the Sunnyside Park has always been a central gathering place for many in the neighbourhood. He cleared that they wanted to invest in its future by ensuring a safe, beautiful and welcoming environment for all.
Hammer added, “Seeing this vision come to life has been incredible and we hope this upgraded space continues to be a blessing to families, dog-walkers, schoolchildren and the broader community.”
According Councillor Francine Higham, the enhancements made to Sunnyside Park are about so much more than the infrastructure, as it fosters a sense of belonging and well-being for all who visit.
“Our is that it remains a vibrant and well-loved recreational space for years to come,” expressed Higham.
