Africa: The Department of Cooperative Governance is currently leading SDGs localisation workshops in various participating Intermediate City Municipalities #ICMs.
The objective of the workshops is to translate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into local actions and impacts that contribute to the global achievement of the SDGs.
More significantly, the workshops are aimed at deepening #ICM officials’ appreciation of the relevance of local developmental agendas as well as developing a robust framework through which the SDGs can be localised in their municipal contexts.
The primary scope of the workshops is the preparation of localisation frameworks for SDG implementation for the following ICMs:
- Mogale City Local Municipality
- Sol Plaatje Local Municipality
- Steve Tshwete Local Municipality
- Merafong Local Municipality
- KwaDukuza Local Municipality
- City of Mbombela
Some of the intended outcomes include:
To co-develop a framework in which the SDGs are meaningful in the context of the selected municipalities.
To identify current gaps and opportunities in further institutionalising the SDGs through their alignment with local planning, reporting and financing frameworks across different spheres of government.
To empower officials to use the SDGs as enablers of effective planning and project and programme design. Those who have participated in the sessions would, in turn, be expected to share learnings with colleagues and across different departments, as well as political leadership.
To co-create a plan of action for each municipality to use and report on the SDGs going forward.
To co-define a clear roadmap of the next steps over the course of the next few years.
To contribute to the creation of a community of practice among local governments for continuous exchange and learning on the localisation of global policies.
The workshops will run until the second week of August.
