Cameroon: The Tubah Council has started the construction of the roads and pavements with recyclable plastic. The Town council where this unique initiative emerged from is situated in the Bambili Town in the North West Region.
The Town council is not the first to use plastic for the construction of roads, as the innovation has been put to use to use in several nations. However, the initiative has received widespread applause from climate change activists.
On of the major reasons why the Tubah Council has started to use plastic in their roads is because they want to eliminate plastic waste from the community. Plastic a non-biodegradable item and the incessant use of plastic has remained a cause of significant concern for environment advocates.
The disposal of plastic has been affecting the world on a large scale as it does not break down or decompose easily. As such, the world has had to come up with more creative ways in which they can utilize plastic waste that is being generated.
The youngsters of Tubah Council are responsible for spearheading the construction projects in the community. They have announced that they remain com mitted to ridding the community of plastic waste.
The youth of the community have already started making efforts in this direction. In August 2024, youngsters teamed up with Municipality and launched an Eco Friendly Construction project in the community.
The aim of the project was to construct classrooms and toilets in the community usingĀ plastic bottles. Under the project, the stakeholders constructed two classroom blocks and four toilets using 1500 plastic bottles.
The youngsters of the community were hired to collect plastic bottles and fill them up with sand. The sand filled bottles were made ready for construction. The community has also established a factory to turn plastic bottles into pavement blocks that can be used for construction.
The Mayor of the municipality, Martin Tanjong has been a strong advocate of environment protection. He is proud to note that the municipality is champion the cause of waste management and environment protection.
He highlighted, while talking about the project, that he wants to leave a legacy for the future generations.
