Turkana, Kenya: Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Janerose Tioko, headed a graduation ceremony for 23 trainees in irrigated agriculture at Lobur, Turkana North. The ceremony was hosted to award certificates to students who completed their training course of over five months.
The five-month training programme was facilitated by Furrows in the Desert (FID), an agricultural development project by the Lobur Catholic Mission.
The Ceremony was held in the presence of several delegations from the Turkana County agricultural department, FID Officials and young graduate men and women.
While speaking at the Ceremony, Turkana County Chief Janerose Tioko expressed her pleasure after seeing the Young women’s participation.
In her remarks, she expressed admiration for the energy and the significant participation of women in agriculture. She also urged the female graduates to take the lead in sharing the acquired skills with other women and youth.
The County Chief Officer assured FID officials of the County’s commitment to collaborate with the institution, particularly in capacity building focusing on the food security agenda.
The Deputy Director for Agriculture, Esau Emmanuel, commended the positive impact of FID in promoting agricultural activities in Turkana North. He encouraged them to extend their programs to other regions.
FID Director Falgas Macque challenged the trainees to apply the acquired skills and emphasised the importance of ensuring their impact is reflected in society.
The Sub-county Administrator Ekwakai Lobeck, Sub-county Agriculture Officer John Lokuwom and Sub-county Land Reclamation Officer Eliud Ewoi were also present among the delegations.
The team of graduates inspected ongoing works at the Kokuro Drip Irrigation Project.
Reportedly, The Ceremony was the 19th graduation of Furrows in the Desert.
As per the Turkana County Government, the graduates have worked hard, and now they have acquired all the skills and knowledge to be independent and produce food.
The Furrows of the Desert Organisation have received the guests from the sponsors of the Ceremony, Kokuselei MCSPA, DCA from Kakuma.
This year, They had the presence of Chief Officer Jenrose Tioko as the guest of honour and the director of the Ministry of Agriculture to create new links to collaborate for the benefit of the Turkana people.
