South Africa: Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape marketing at global level, hosted the annual Operations Day, as a moment for staff to engage deeply with the strategy of the agency and reaffirmed the shared commitment to drive inclusive sustainable economic growth in Cape Town and the Western Cape.
They are building their strategy which is anchored by five key outcomes, i.e.:
- A differentiated Cape Town and the Western Cape as a leading regional economy
- Increased foreign and domestic investment into Cape Town and the Western Cape
- Growth in Western Cape exports of goods and services
- Growth in leisure tourism consideration in international and local markets, as well as growth in business events
- Future-fit, relevant and trusted Wesgro
Furthermore, the officials were honoured to hear from the Board Chairperson – Dr. Shirley Zinn, who highlighted the impressive achievements of the agency across tourism, trade and investment.
SARS Commissioner – Ed Kieswetter was also present there, who shared how AI, data and technology have transformed organisations and continued to unlock efficiency and excellence.
Also, the Cultural Intelligence Expert – Nene Molefi, who led a powerful session on leadership attributes that create multiplier effects across teams.
The major highlight was the Awards Ceremony, where long-service awards (for 10, 15, 20 and 25 years) were presented by the CEO in recognition of incredible contributions over decades.
Staff voted values awards and celebrated those who embody the spirit of Wesgro by including innovation, integrity and professionalism. Congratulations to Sandiso Gcwabe CA(SA), Melissa Yacoob (née Tarr), Erica Joubert, Razaan Bester CA (SA) and Khanyo Sobetwa for their awards.
Following 2024 recipient Adrienne Golden’s reflections, CEO Wrenelle Stander announced Khanyo Sobetwa as the 2025 CEO Award winner – recognising him for his passion, professionalism and commitment to client-led excellence.
She stated that at Wesgro, they remain committed to client-led service delivery, strengthening competitiveness, driving economic growth and supporting job creation across Cape Town and the Western Cape.
