Zambia: Muchinga Province has recorded 22 births on New Year’s Day. The parents and healthcare authorities of the region are celebrating the newborns and  their families

Provincial Health Director, David Silweya said the babies were born between midnight and 10 hours of January 1, 2024. The members of the healthcare fraternity of the province have shared detailed statistics of the new year births.

Dr Silweya said Chinsali and Mpika Districts recorded five babies each, with Nakonde recording nine.

He added that Lavushimanda has recorded one New Year baby while Mafinga has two.

“We have a total of 22 babies born on this important day and am grateful to the members of staff for their tireless efforts in ensuring that the babies were delivered safely,” Dr Silweya said.

Meanwhile, the provincial administration has donated seven baby hampers to Chinsali General and District Hospitals as a way of celebrating New Year. The baby hampers will be utilized by the hospital for the babies who were in need of this assistance.

District Commissioner, Samson Muchemwe made the donation on behalf of the administration.

Muchemwa encouraged the mothers to ensure that they enrol their children in school once they are old enough without any excuse. He reminded the parents that the Government has provided free education for all.

He said it is the duty for parents to ensure that children are taken care of and nurtured into responsible citizens as they are future leaders.

“Children are a blessing and a gift from God, We are happy that you have brought a life on this earth to add to the population of this great nation,” the DC stated.

The celebration of the new year babies also continued in different parts of the country. Vice President of the country, Mutale Nalumango visited the Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital and Chipata First Level Hospital. She donated baby hampers to 14 new year babies at the teaching hospital.

The Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo was also present  with the Vice President during her visit.
