Zimbabwe: Energy and Power Development Minister – Edgar Moyo went to Shanghai, China, to explore possibilities for investment and collaboration in the energy sector. Both nations signed an official agreement making a deal to collaboratively initiate the solar energy and power development programmes. The Second Republic is moving to create a robust power sector that will support the country’s economic development.
Minister Moyo said that Zimbabwe is at the epicentre of SADC and the energy sector, and the government has implemented the necessary policies, such as the National Development Strategy that prioritises energy.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to creating a favourable environment for energy sector growth, Moyo added that they have the necessary tools to achieve the goals.
He also said that they are pleased to welcome investors in the energy space in Zimbabwe and the nation is open for business and they look up to collaboration, technology transfer and investments.
He added further to his statement, “The MOUs we have signed during the past days were not just about signatures. As the government wanted to see action, so we are determined to see the fruitful implementation of the agreements.”
The minister is accompanied by the Executive Chairman of ZESA – Dr Sydney Gata and other official representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Together, they are seeking to strengthen the country’s energy sector through partnerships with engineering, procurement, construction and funding companies.
Dr Gata told the investors that Zimbabwe enjoyed sunshine nearly throughout the year, which makes it an ideal location for solar energy development programmes.
On Jan 25, 2024, the delegates met with a diversified Chinese business delegation that was led by the Vice Mayor of Weihai Municipal Government and former counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe – Zhao Baogang.
Zhao stated that they have a longstanding relationship with Zimbabwe and want to find more ways to strengthen the partnership. Zimbabwe has a very strong energy industry, including thermal, renewable, and nuclear energy.
He added that they have a strong presence in the international market and have a global vision. Zimbabwe is one of the most important partners as they have a very good foundation for cooperation.
Chairman of Shandong Dingneng – Liu Lining, witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding between Chinese companies and ZESA Enterprises (ZENT).
Many other companies visited, including Shanghai Jingdao Electric, Shanghai Industrial Boiler Company, Batterro Tech Company, Chint Group, Astronergy, Taich Group and Fox Energy Storage.
