Zimbabwe: More than one hundred and thirty births were recorded on the day of Christmas. Some of the major city hospitals of the country gave birth to newborn children.
Instead, clinics, private maternity units or homes and other centres have given more birth to the infants than the hospitals.
As per the records, Following are the city hospitals and maternity homes that gave birth to the newborn babies:
- In Harare, three major hospitals gave birth to ninety-two babies. Out of which, most of the new born were boys.
- In Chitungwiza Central Hospital, in total, twenty-three babies were born, out of which 12 were boys and 11 were girls.
- In Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, 44 babies were born, out of which 30 were boys and 14 were girls.
- The Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Wing of Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals registered 25 babies, out of which 15 were boys and 10 were girls.
- In Masvingo, Masvingo General Hospital recorded 10 births out of which five were boys and five were girls. There was a pair of twin girls who were born through the Caesarian Section.
- In Beitbridge, the Beitbridge District Hospital registered five new births. The hospital is a referral centre for the neighbouring Mwenezi and Gwanda districts. 350 deliveries are handled at the health facility per month.
- In Bulawayo, 27 babies were born at Bulawayo’s major hospitals, Mpilo Central Hospital registered 12 births and the United Bulawayo Hospitals registered 15 births, out of which 11 were girls and 16 were boys.
An interview was conducted, in which some of the mothers responded to the interrogation and said that they were not expecting to give birth on the festive occasion as their pregnancy appointments were not scheduled on the day.
Reportedly, the hospitals will generally handle the more complicated births, where there might be complications for the mother or child, while the clinics will handle the far larger number of trouble-free births.
