Zimbabwe: The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released an update related to a viral video showing abuse of alcohol by minors in Harare Central Business District (CBD).
The Zimbabwe police identified the two minors, aged 11 and 13 years. Parents of the culprits were also recognised and located.
The father and mother of the two minors were separated in November 2022 and were taken into the custody of their mother in the Epworth area in Harare.
Later, the kids got engaged in street begging, vending and some misdemeanours in Harare Central Business District with other street kids.
The incident took place on Monday, December 25, 2023. In the viral video, the two boys can be seen in the company of eight street kids who obtained Mayfair alcohol through a person who is yet to be identified by the Police.
The minors can be seen sitting on the veranda of a cell phone shop along Inez Terrez near a prominent food outlet where they consumed alcohol openly in public.
The ZIP also identified a local business person who recorded the viral video. The reference video went viral on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, just a day after the incident happened. The person is currently assisting the Police to search for the full facts on the incident.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still investigating the identity of the other minors who were involved in the company of the two boys. The allegations record some women who were seated at the corner of Speke and Inez Terez Street who interacted with the minors.
The Zimbabwe Police confirmed that the minors were drinking alcohol while eating some chips and chicken.
Reportedly, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating the case of Keisha Makovana, 13 years old, who was stabbed to death with a knife by Munyaradzi Musariri, age 27, at Glen Norah B Flats after the two were found intimate in the girl’s parents’ bedroom on Dec 26.
The suspect claims that he had agreed with the minor to stab each other to death after being caught in her parents’ blankets between 06:00 p.m. to 07:00 p.m. The suspect is currently admitted at a local hospital under Police surveillance.
Both cases are being investigated under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner Senior Staff Officer – Paul Nyathi, who is the Press and Public Relations Officer to the Commissioner General of Police, Police General Headquarters.
