Zambia: The Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) has announced the conclusion of the Zone 4.5 Chess Championship. The chess Championship are being hosted all over the nation with the chess enthusiasts participating in the event.

The chess championship attracted participants from five countries in Southern and Central Africa. Chess, being one of the oldest games in the world, has emerged as a favourite among the people of the nation.

The officials have shared that it is important for the chess administration and the indoor games stakeholders of the nation to continue promoting the game. The officials have expressed their excitement on the success of the Zone 4.5 Chess Championship.

Further, CFZ president, Leslie Chikuse, says the tournament commenced on August 11, 2024 and ended on Saturday, August 17. The Championship had a number of rounds, including the sections for men, women, and junior chess players.

He said the tournament was co-hosted by Project Chess Zambia, an academy and the Chess Federation of Zambia. The officials have shared that the chess players in Zambia have been preparing for the upcoming international chess related events.

Chikuse stated that the Federation is using the event to prepare for the Chess Olympiad. The event will have chess players and chess experts from all over the world. The Chess Olympiad will be hosted in Budapest, Hungary from 11th to 23rd September, 2024.

He has commended various sponsors for their support in making the Zone 4.5 Chess Championship a resounding success. Chikuse has disclosed that about 12 local players will be participating in the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, which is the biggest chess event.

He further said the winners from the Chess Olympiad will qualify for the Chess World Cup for the year 2024

Chikuse added that the Federation will embark on a countrywide talent identification programme in preparation for the event, which will involve over 15 federations.

Chikuse has since called on corporate entities and national bodies to support the initiative.
