Zambia: The 12th Session of the Mozambique-Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS) concluded in Maputo, Mozambique, on Friday.

The Session brought together high-ranking officials from both countries to discuss matters of mutual interest and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The Mozambican delegation, headed by Cristòvăo Artur CHUME, Minister of National Defence, oversaw the proceedings as Chairperson. In contrast, the Zambian delegation, led by Ambrose Lwiji LUFUMA, MP, Minister of Defence, played a significant role in co-chairing the Meeting.

During the Session, the Commission expressed gratitude to Presidents Fillipe Jacinto NYUSI of Mozambique and Hakainde HICHILEMA of Zambia for their continued support, enabling the successful convening of the 12th Session.

Reviewing the resolutions of the previous Session held in Lusaka in November 2022, the Commission emphasized the importance of implementing the agreed-upon measures before the next Session.

Discussions covered political, socio-economic, and security situations in both countries, with a particular focus on democratic principles, combating terrorism and addressing transnational organized crime.

The Commission expressed concern about terrorist activities in northern Mozambique and recognized Zambia’s support in combating terrorism.

Additionally, the threat of transnational organized crime, including human and drug trafficking, poaching, illegal logging, and smuggling, was highlighted.

Economic discussions centred on promoting investment in various sectors, including agriculture and mining, despite both countries grappling with the adverse effects of climate change, floods, droughts and ongoing global conflicts.

Affirming its commitment to strong bilateral relations, the Commission underscored the need for continued collaboration with other Southern African nations and beyond to maintain regional peace and stability.

The Zambian delegation extended gratitude to Mozambique for the warm reception and wished the country success in its upcoming general elections in October 2024.

Furthermore, the Mozambican delegation was graciously invited to the 13th Session of the Zambia-Mozambique JPCDS in 2025.

The Session, characterized by a friendly atmosphere, highlighted the enduring cordial relations between Mozambique and Zambia.

Zambia Air Force Commander, Lt Gen Oscar Msitu Nyoni, also attended the Meeting and co-chaired the Defence Committee, while his Mozambique counterpart was the Chairperson for the same Committee.
