KwaZulu Natal: A 17 year old female was raped and robbed while seeking employment in Verulam – KwaZulu Natal (KZN).
The female arrived with a relative at Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) this morning at approximately 09:41. She informed RUSA Members that she boarded a mini bus from Inanda to Verulam – KZN yesterday morning (Monday) with the intention of seeking employment.
During her search, she met a man on Wick Street. He befriended the matric student and struck up a conversation. He informed her that his company was seeking staff and would assist in arranging an interview.
The teenager boarded a taxi with him and disembarked at an unfamiliar location. The suspect produced a firearm and asked the female to remain silent.
He instructed her to enter a bush, where he raped her. The suspect thereafter stole her Hisense U50 cellphone and R70 in cash. He advised her to remain in the bush and not to follow him.
The victim complied with his instructions and exited the dense vegetation after a period of time. She sought assistance from a local businessman who provided her with taxi fare to return home.
The female has visited a medical facility following the incident but has yet to register a criminal case.
Jobseekers are urged to be on high alert. Reaction Officers have attended numerous call-outs where females have been lured to sparsely populated areas where they have been robbed or raped.
The suspects are convincing and, in some cases, produce employment documents in an attempt to authenticate their scam.
Rape cases are increasing in South Africa; KwaZulu Natal and Reaction Unit South Africa are searching for the culprit, and residents of the area are helping the police officers and reaction unit officers. One of the residents said, “Rape is unbearable, and she was just 17, people are greedy nowadays.”
