Mauritius: Blood Pressure Monitors were remitted to several families of the Chagossian Community by the Chairman of the Chagossian Welfare Fund Board and Leader of the Chagos Refugees Group, Mr Olivier Bancoult, during a ceremony held at Marie Charles Alexis Chagossian Community Centre, in Baie du Tombeau, yesterday.
The initiative followed the pledge made by the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, to roll out governmental measures with the aim of enhancing the quality of life of Chagossians, during the wreath-laying ceremony, held on 3 November 2022, to commemorate the deportation of the Chagossian Community.
In that context, 289 Digital Electronic Blood Pressure Monitors had been acquired by the Chagossian Welfare Fund to donate to Chagossian families residing in Mauritius and Agalega Islands.
In his address to the Chagossian families present at the ceremony, Mr Olivier Bancoult underlined that the initiative was geared towards providing them with the necessary facilities so that they could undertake self-tests to keep their health under proper check.
He added that they would be able to check their blood pressure at any time in the comfort of their house instead of visiting health institutions to avail of this service.
On that note, he stressed that the Chagossian Welfare Fund had the well-being of its members at the core of its agenda and would continue to ensure their welfare.
The need to take proper care of one’s health through good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle was further underlined.
The Chairman of the Chagossian Welfare Fund Board also reiterated his unwavering fight for the rights of the deported members of the Chagossian Community and thus dwelt on the core purpose of his recent visit to the United States of America.
