Botswana: Botswana Police Service shot the three men, aged between 30 and 40, believed to be from Botswana.
The Botswana Police Service Department shared the news of the shooting on their official Facebook page, in which they mentioned, “Three men aged between 30 and 40, believed to be Batswana, were fatally shot in an exchange of fire with members of the Botswana Police Service early this morning (09/11/2023) in Mochudi.”
There is a suspicion from the Botswana Police that the trio were planning a robbery. The officers acted swiftly, and upon arrival at their residence, a shoot out ensued. In the process, a police officer sustained gunshot wounds and is receiving treatment at the hospital.
They are believed to be part of a syndicate involved in a series of robberies and stock theft incidents that have been happening in Mochudi and surrounding areas.
The Police have since recovered three (3) Rifles, one (1) Shotgun, a Pistol, and a Revolver, together with an assortment of more than 100 live ammunition. The recovered items also consist of butchery equipment, knives, and axes suspected to have been stolen following a case in which a Butchery was broken into.
Police preliminary investigations reveal that the recovered weapons were stolen during a robbery that occurred on 08/11/2023 in the Republic of South Africa.
The investigations into the matter are ongoing.
On the other hand, in the ongoing Kgomokhumo Operation in Mahalapye and Palapye Districts, three men aged between 31 and 43 today (08/11/2023) appeared before Mogapinyana Customary Court facing charges of Stealing Stock.
The accused persons are Petros Majwana Fonyoko, aged 43, of Kgosing ward, Modise Majwana, aged 34, of Leshobo ward and Tshepang Sekonopi, aged 31, of Mpotswe ward, all from Mogapinyana.
The trio was arrested by Kgamokhumo operatives on 4th November 2023 in Mogapinyana after being found in possession of a carcass of a beast suspected to be stolen. The beast is suspected to have been stolen and slaughtered on 3rd November 2023 at Sepenane cattle post and was taken to Mogapinyana, where it was sold to Individuals.
In light of the above scenario, members of the public are cautioned that the purchase and sale of meat from an unlicensed source is an offence under the Stock Theft Act, and anyone found to be in contravention of this provision would be liable to a punishment of a 5-year prison term.
The accused have been remanded in custody and will be back in court on the 15″ of November 2023
