Mauritius, Port Louis: The Attorney General, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Maneesh Gobin, received, this morning, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy, Dr Ana Brian Nougrères, in his Office in Port Louis.
She was accompanied by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Miss Lisa Simrique Singh.
The courtesy call was followed by a working session comprising stakeholders from various Ministries and Departments, including the Attorney General’s Office and the Financial Intelligence Unit, amongst others.
The Special Rapporteur is currently on a visit to Mauritius from 27 November to 04 December 2023. This visit is in line with the fact that Mauritius is one of the few non-European Union countries which have ratified Convention 108, entitled ‘Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the processing of personal data’.
The visit will also focus on the review of Government policies, laws on surveillance, the interception of digital communications and collection of personal data, the identification of any actions that may intrude on privacy without compelling justification in the area of digital technology and advocacy of privacy rights of vulnerable groups and highlighting private sector responsibilities.
About the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy
Dr Ana Brian Nougrères is an independent human rights expert appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to promote and protect the right to privacy, considered to be a fundamental human right. The mandate of the Special Rapporteur is to develop and promote best practices, report alleged violations, and raise awareness of the right, considering the influence and impact of new and emerging technologies.
Furthermore, she also conducts courtesy visits to examine the state of human rights with regard to privacy in the country of a Member State and report the findings to the Human Rights Council.
