Edo state, Nigeria: Esan Central Local Government Council has started work om the evacuation of dirts and clearing the dumpsite. The cleanup drive is being held within Irrua Main Market in the LG administrative headquarters.
The aim of the exercise is to sensitize people of Esan Central Local Government Council and the surrounding areas about cleanliness. The Local Government Council Chairman, Paul Iyoha delivered some brief remarks at the event.
He said, the evacuation was in fulfillment of the promised he made during his inspection tour of the market few weeks ago.
Iyoha said, “today, we are here to fulfil some of our promises to the traders and the people of Esan Central. We told them during our campaigns that we are going to make sure that we give them a conducive environment to do their business.
“So, we are here to evacuate the first and make the area clean and by the grace of God, it will not stop half way, and it will not stop today. This will be a continuous program in this administration.
Environmental sanitation and cleanliness is a core objective of this government and we are committed to making sure Esan Central is clean and conducive for all.”
The Chairman also appealed those residing around the market to refrain from turning the market to their dumping site. He asserted that modalities would be put in place to ensure 24 hours surveillance round the market and defaulters would be punished.
He said, “Now that we are cleaning the market and evacuating the dump site, I want to appeal to residents around the market to stop dumping their trash here. We are going to set up a waste management program that would move round from street to street and ensure that your waste are properly disposed.
Meanwhile, the Supervising Councillor, Environment and Health, Hon (Engr) Mike Ebhodaghe Obazele said “we all know that health is wealth and we cannot allow our people to continue to trade in this kind of unhealthy environment and that is why we are embarking on this exercise. We are not stopping here. It will be a regular affair and we will make this local government clean and healthy.”
