Malawi: The National Cancer Center of Malawi in Lilongwe has asked the government to invest in the construction of radiation bunkers. The building will house radiation therapy machines for cancer treatment.
The authorities believe that patients who need radiation treatment for their cancer have to travel to other countries to get the treatment. The Head of Oncology Department at the Centre Doctor Richard Nyasolera called on the government to construct radiation bunkers.
He shared a video where he talked about the benefits that the introduction of radiation treatment will bring to the country.
He said that once radiation bunkers are complete, there will be no need to refer patients outside the country for radiotherapy treatment. This will help the government of Malawi in saving important resources which they can use for the benefit of the people.
The people of Malawi, who need treatment for their cancer, will also benefit from the construction as they will not have to travel to different countries. Currently, Malawi only offers chemotherapy services to cancer patients.
Radiation therapy is an important part of cancer treatment and has saved many lives. Chemotherapy is the most well known forms of cancer treatment, but it can be made more effective by adding multiple treatment regimes.
Since Malawi offers only a singular form of cancer treatment to the patients, they have to travel to other nations to get treatments that are unavailable in the country. This leads to financial burden and added fatigue to a body which is already weak.
The National Cancer Centre of Malawi expressed their hope that the government will hear the organization’s plea. The construction of a radiation therapy bunker is important to provide a more well rounded treatment to cancer patients.
