Egyptian Olympic Committee (EOC) Treasurer – Mohamed Abdel Aziz Ghoneim said that the State-of-the-Art sports infrastructure Egypt was built during the last few years, which encouraged the country to think about organising the games to exploit the great human and organisational capabilities

Considering this, he further added to his statement that President of IOC – Thomas Bach on a recent visit to the country said that Egypt is ready to organise the Olympics games and has come a long way, reaching 60% of the organising efforts, including facilities and roads. Whereas, the rest are related to budget and financial issues.

The Egypt in the new administrative capital ‘Egypt International Olympic City,’ the nation has been building east of Cairo since 2015, which plans to have a 93,900-capacity national stadium and twenty-one other sports facilities.

Bidding Process

So, if Egypt is planning to bid for Olympics 2036, then there is a certain process that they need to follow. The IOC has changed the bidding process, the new rules and regulations were approved at the 134th IOC Session on June 24, 2019 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

According to the key proposals, driven by the relevant recommendations from Olympic Agenda 2020 are as follows:

  • First, establish a permanent ongoing dialogue to explore and create the interest among cities or regions or countries and National Olympic Committees, for any Olympic event.
  • Then create two Future Host Commissions (Summer and Winter Games) to oversee the interest in the future Olympic events and report to the IOC executive board.
  • After that, give the IOC Session more influence by having non-executive board members form, which is a part of Future Host Commissions.
  • The IOC has also modified the Olympic Charter to increase its flexibility by removing the date of election from seven years before the games and changing the host as a city from a single city or region or country to multiple cities or regions or countries.
  • The change in the bidding process was earlier criticised by the members of the German bid as ‘incomprehensible’ and hard to surpass, in terms of non-transparency.
