Cape Town: The Recreation and Parks Department has resumed the ‘Youth Hiking Programme’ as a part of the initiative by City of Cape Town to promote physical activity and remain connected to the nature.

As Cape Town has received heavier than usual winter rainfall, the Table Mountain trails were initially closed for hiking, which resulted in a brief postponement of training sessions.

Reportedly, training hikes were relocated to Constantia Nek, to maintain the momentum. Once safe and suitable the trails will be opened again. The location is popular among the hikers, who possess various skill levels and made it accessible to a broad audience.

58 young people participated in the hike along with facilitators and marshals on Saturday, September 21, 2024. The participants belonged to Ottery, Seawinds, Khayelitsha, Woodstock, Mitchells Plain and Strand.

The hike began at Constantia Nek and wound, as its way to the Woodhead Reservoir provided a picturesque backdrop for the group from various ‘after-school programmes’ across the Cape Town.

The initiative was established to encourage the fitness and to foster the camaraderie and a love of the outdoors among young participants.

Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that they are thrilled to see so many young people becoming active and embracing the beauty of the natural environment. The hiking challenge majorly promoted the physical health and also instilled the valuable life skills, such as teamwork and resilience.

“We hope to inspire even more youth to join the programmes,” said Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.

The next adventurous hike is scheduled to occur on Saturday, September 28, 2024 and will mark the first event on the Tafelberg side of Table Mountain.

In continuation, the participants will build their skills and confidence as they prepare for the main challenge, that is set for Saturday, October 26, 2024. The teams will tackle the highest point on Table Mountain Maclear’s Beacon.

Notably, each group consisting of 10 people, will be accompanied by a responsible facilitator to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
