Cape Town: Holiday Cheers sparks good vibes in the town as new homes granted under City of Cape Town Gugulethu Infill Housing Project. It is a special festive holiday season for new homeowners.
Reportedly, Fifty-two (52) Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes were handed over to the qualifying beneficiaries of the Erf 8448 section of the project this coming week.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim said that it is always a joyous occasion to hand over homes to qualifying beneficiaries.
Pophaim added that it is even more special for them as it means a lot for beneficiaries. The majority of them elderly and the middle-aged are celebrating the festive season in their new homes.
It is also very meaningful for them as the project faces several significant challenges. The city has completely taken over the project since its inception and is making meaningful progress.
The Gugulethu Infill Housing Project will deliver total 1,004 homes to qualify beneficiaries and their families. It is made up of 570 units at the Gugulethu Erf 8448 site and 434 at Mau Mau in Nyanga.
According to Carl Pophaim, the teams are absolutely committed to complete the Gugulethu Infill Housing Project as soon as possible, considering the beneficiaries and their families. He extended his gratitude to all the stakeholders that includes communities, teams from City of Cape Town and project steering committees for their hard work in moving the rightful qualifying beneficiaries into their new homes.
“We are so pleased to see this project become a success. We have been firm with everything and has done every possible thing to fight against extortion and other challenges that are now delivering to the people who deserve these housing opportunities,” added Councillor Pophaim.
The project has been through several challenges including issues with the contractor, delays related to Covid-19, extortion attempts as well as the unlawful occupation of partially completed units at the Mau-Mau site portion of the project and vandalism to work which is already completed.
Beneficiaries of City of Cape Town Housing Projects are selected in accordance with the city Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs to be registered to ensure housing opportunities which are available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing for the South African legislation.
