Cape Town: The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town urged bathers to stay cautions as the season winds falls down. There have been recorded eleven fatal drownings as far in the 2024-25 season.
Reportedly, the lifeguards attended more than 30 non-fatal drownings, in which the majority of the incidents involved males with multiple occurrences at Camps Bay Beach, Table View Beachfront and Strand Beach.
Considering which, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that she wants to extend her gratitude to the lifeguards for their unwavering commitment and the vital role that they have played in keeping the beaches and pools safe during the busy festive season.
Ross further said that their efforts are often appreciated under the challenging circumstances. Particularly, it is very encouraging to note that there have been zero drownings at pools this season, with a clear testament to their dedication and vigilance.
The operational arrangements on the beaches will continue for the remainder January month, after which certain beaches will see a reduced drowning prevention service. The public is reminded to always keep the golden rules of the City of Cape Town of summer top of mind.
The regulations say, always to swim on beach with lifeguards on duty and between their red and yellow flags. Secondly, do not leave children unsupervised in or around the water. Also, don’t swim under the influence of alcohol. Stay, beware of rip currents. If you’re caught in a current, try to stay calm and look for signal for help.
An official Swimming Pool Schedule Overview has also been shared by the City of Cape Town:
- Daily Operations will be observed from Dec 06, 2024 to Jan 31, 2025 for Community pools from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with the last ticket sold at 5:30 p.m.
- From Feb 01, 2025 to Mar 30, 2025 the pools will remain open on weekends only, Fridays to Sundays during the same hours.
- The daily operations will then resume from Mar 31, 2025 to Apr 21, 2025 for pools.
Furthermore, the indoor pools and sea point pool will remain open year-round, though the operational hours may vary at specific facilities. Several swimming pool facilities are still scheduled to reopen throughout the summer season, which will run until April 2025.
City of Cape Town has outlined timeframes of reopening for these pools, factoring in the scope of work required and barring any unforeseen issues. This approached phase considers the varying needs and conditions of each facility prioritise quality and safety for all users.
Councillor Patricia Van der Ross stated that as they continue to enter into the new season, there are still many warm beach days ahead and they urge all residents and visitors to remain mindful of their safety.
She concluded by stating that,
“Let us continue to follow the golden rules when enjoying the beaches and pools will also ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone when in and around the water.”
