Cape Town: City will host the fifth edition of the Youth Day Classic Basketball Tournament. The City of Cape Town has partnered with African Grassroot Hoops to commemorate Youth Month.
Reportedly, the fifth edition of the tournament looks to be a slam dunk, with 18 U/19 teams who will showcase over 800 young talent at the German International School on June 21 and 22, 2025.
The Classic Basketball Tournament aims to create safe spaces where youth from local communities can access top-level sports. The game will welcome teams from Gugulethu, Cross Roads, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Langa, Heideveld, Mitchells Plain and Rondebosch who will battle it out on the courts over these two-days.
As per the sources, facing off against the squads from across the rest of the country, this competition is the ultimate stage for the young players to showcase their skills, with scouts on the lookout for talent ready to take on major varsity leagues and even international opportunities.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that the African Grassroot Hoops is dedicated to promoting the basketball in greater Cape Town areas.
It is also using the sport as a platform for nurturing young talent into future stars. This tournament goes beyond basketball, offering mentorship from motivational speakers and basketball experts.
Smith marked that the City of Cape Town is proud to be associated with an initiative which celebrates the game of basketball, with the resilience, potential, and hope that the youth represent. They encourage residents to show up in their numbers to create a vibrant atmosphere as the next generation of hoopers by showcasing their talent.
Notably, games on both days will start at 09:00 a.m. and will end at 06:00 p.m. Tickets for spectators start at R100 for adults and R25 for kids.
