Kenya Ports Authority was handed over the newly constructed Shimoni Fish Port facility that followed the successful completion by the contractor M/s. Southern Engineering Company (SECO).
Reportedly, the Managing Director – Captain William Ruto led the top management in taking delivery of the Ksh 2.6-billion-shilling project, which commenced on Oct 01, 2022.
The port facility was equipped with modern facilities for vessels landing; fish processing and cold storage is expected to bolster the fisheries value chain.
Considering the inauguration of the new port facility, Captain William Ruto said that the Fish Port represents a unique strategic shift of the approach by the Authority to port operations. This diversifies beyond cargo and focuses on specialized fisheries infrastructure.
Ruto added that the port will generate employment opportunities and boost local economic growth in the region. The port captain further noted that the Kenya Ports Authority is committed to tpromote the efficient [port operations to facilitate both regional integration and international trade.
They are therefore keen to focus on investing in port infrastructure to boost efficiency and service delivery. Captain Ruto further added to his statement that the journey towards exploiting blue economy has started and he is proud that a Kenyan firm and consultant have delivered a very good project whose feasibility study commenced way back in year 2017.
Furthermore, the Managing Director of the KPA also commended the engineers and technical team of the Authority for ensuring professional supervision throughout the construction period. MD-Captain William Ruto extended his gratitude and thanked the stakeholders for turning up to witness the handing over of the new port from the contractor to Kenya Ports Authority awaiting the official commissioning later.
