Cape Town is all set to welcome exciting summer events. August in the city capped a stellar month of events which kicked off an exciting summer full of events.
Events Permit Office (EPO) approved 104 events in the month of August. The events will range from football and rugby to film festivals and lifestyle festivals, thes will also include running events and many more. The approval combined the events that attracted approx. 250,000 people with spectators and participants.
Recently held, the Castle Rugby Championship on Aug 23, 2025 between the Springboks and Australia attracted crowd of over 62,000 at the DHL Stadium.
The TotalSports Women’s Race held on Women’s Day saw more than 11,000 runners. The event took the runners to the streets while Stellenbosch FC’s Betway Premiership match against Kaizer Chiefs welcomed over 21,000 spectators on Aug 10, 2025 at the Athlone Stadium.
MMC for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that the events hosted in Aug 2025 generated economic activity of around R200 million for the Town. This illustrated the importance of events to the economic growth of the city.
These events attracted a huge number of visitors in Cape Town. This highly supported the:
- Local Economy (through accommodation)
- Transportation
- Local Restaurants
- Retail, and
- Tourism Attractions
Smith said that the Events Department of the City of Cape Town is ready for a busier month to handle in September, as a bustling summer season of events is awaiting in 2025.
Various Events to be observed in Cape Town
Currently, FAME Week Africa is taking place at various venues. Cape Town will be hosting a variety of events in September, that will include:
- Open Book Festival: from Sept 05 to 07 at the Homecoming Centre, District Six
- Khayelitsha 10km Road Race: Sept 07 from Mandela Stadium
- Western Province v/s Boland Cavilliers: on Sept 06 at the DHL Stadium
- OUTsurance Gun Run: Sept 13 to 14 from the Green Point Precinct
- Afrikaans is Groot: on Sept 20 at the DHL Stadium
- Chapman’s Peak Half Marathon: Sept 21 from Hout Bay Beach
- WOMAD Cape Town: from Sept 22 to 28 at various venues including the V&A Waterfront
Furthermore, the month of September will also see comeback of United Rugby Championship, which will be played among the DHL Stormers against the defending champions Leinster on Sept 26, 2025 at the DHL Stadium.
Later on, 2025 SAFA Cape Town will be observed on Oct 18. The event will record the crowning of the 2025 Coke Cup Champions at the biggest amateur football tournament of the country at Athlone Stadium.
The city will gather at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Oct 19, 2025, that will be taking its final hurdle towards becoming the first Abbott World Marathon Major of Africa.
After some days to marathon, the Speed Classic Cape Town will take place on Oct 25 and 26. It will take over Philip Kgosana Drive for two days of speed, motorsport heritage and horsepower.
The Red Bull Flugtag will make a soaring return to the Mother City for the first time in over 13 years. It will be hosted at the V&A Waterfront, and the event will bring a wildly entertaining spectacle of flight, fun, and fearless creativity.
City of Cape Town will also see inauguration of Surf Expo Africa, as the first all-ocean sports and beach lifestyle trade show of the continent. It will then finish off the November offerings with a gathering of passionate ocean sports enthusiasts and beach-goers from across the country.
