Dominica celebrated its 47th Independence anniversary on November 03, 2025 under the theme ‘47 Years of Progress and Purpose’. All gathered at the National Day Observance Ceremony where, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit reflected on remarkable journey of Dominica, from 1978 to its transformation into a resilient and forward-looking Caribbean nation.
The addressal delivered by the Prime Minister of Dominica – Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit highlighted the enduring faith, unity and development of the nation that emphasised five key pillars of progress in Dominica.
Legacy of Leadership and Nation Building
Prime Minister Skerrit paid tribute to the leaders and administrations that have shaped Dominica and its destiny. He mentioned, from Patrick Roland John’s historic leadership at independence, to Dame Mary Eugenia Charles’ era of stability and integrity.
He highlighted Edison James’ economic reforms, and how each administration contributed to strengthening democratic institutions, economic resilience, and building national identity. Under Skerrit’s leadership, the Dominica Labour Party, since 2000, continues this legacy through modernization, infrastructure, and climate resilience.
Infrastructure, Energy and Economic Transformation
The physical and economic landscape of Dominica has evolved dramatically in all these years. Major infrastructure projects such as the International Airport, the Cabrits Marina, and the Geothermal Power Plant in Laudat symbolise the nation’s vision for sustainable development and global connectivity.
The government has emphasised on renewable energy, road modernisation, and tourism expansion which underscores Dominica’s transition to a green economy.
PM Skerrit reaffirmed the commitment of the nation towards energy independence and resilience, with projects such as the geothermal plant that is set to make Dominica one of the greenest nations in the world.
Strengthening Economy through Citizenship and Regional Unity
During his addressal, Prime Minister Skerrit lauded the success of Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme in Dominica, which is continuously funding the major national projects without burdening the future generations.
The recent establishment of the Eastern Caribbean Citizenship by Investment Regulatory Authority ensures transparency and compliance. Skerrit also celebrated the implementation of free movement among four OECS member states – Dominica, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Belize which marked a milestone in Caribbean integration and opportunity.
Achieved Social Progress with Housing, Education and Healthcare
Skerrit emphasised on social inclusion that contributed in the journey of Dominica’s Independence. Thousands of families have benefitted from the:
- Housing Revolution,
- Public Sector Workers received increase in Salary, and
- A new minimum wage will take effect in Dec 2025
Considering the health sector, the government enhanced services with the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital and refurbishment of the local wellness centres. Education has been reformed and is advancing, with new primary schools, which is expanded by the scholarships, and a focus on technical and digital literacy to prepare youth for the global economy.
Culture and Heritage – National Pride of Dominica
Prime Minister Skerrit acknowledged the vibrant culture and unity of Dominica, highlighted by the 25th edition of World Creole Music Festival, which boosted tourism and reaffirmed Dominica as the ‘Creole Capital of the World’.
Skerrit also honoured late Prime Ministers Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles with the Dominica Award of Honour and announced plans for a National Heroes Park to commemorate the icons of the nation.
Furthermore, Dominica is looking forward towards its 50th anniversary to be celebrated in 2028. The Prime Minister urged citizens to uphold the principles of faith, hard work, and unity. He reaffirmed that Dominica’s strength lies in its people, resilient, visionary, and deeply proud of their heritage. He affirmed that no storm could break their spirit, together, they shall continue to build a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable Dominica.
