Cape Town: City’s Let’s ACT campaign brings climate action murals to communities. The City of Cape Town is taking energy efficiency and climate action awareness directly to communities.
Reportedly, it will further roll out community-created murals in Atlantis and Lansdowne as part of the Cape Town Future Energy Festival. It is developed through co-design workshops and the murals by artists like Wayne Beukes (Atlantis) and Kyle Murphy (Landsdowne). It has further reflected local insights and experiences while promoting practical actions towards more sustainable living.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Energy – Alderman Xanthea Limberg stated that the Let’s ACT campaign by the city drives the message that small actions can lead to big changes. They all have the power to make a positive contribution to the schools, homes, workplaces, neighbourhoods and communities.
The murals will place residents at the centre of sustainable living through creativity and collaboration directly on their doorsteps. This will be a daily reminder of the actions, as all residents can take to live in a more sustainable and climate-friendly manner.
From concept development to implementation and unveiling, these murals are more than public artworks, they are a platform for communities to express their role in shaping a more resilient and energy-conscious future. The community murals also reinforced the City’s commitment to build a more sustainable and inclusive Cape Town.
The city is involving residents directly in the design and storytelling process, as they are raising awareness about clean energy, energy efficiency and climate action. Also, they are empowering communities to take ownership of sustainable solutions which will benefit their neighbourhoods now and for generations to come.
Murals at City libraries are part of the Cape Town Future Energy Festival, which is a city-wide movement to equip residents with the information to make better energy choices. It provides residents the knowledge, practical tools and inspiring experiences, along with the festivals which are helping households while creating awareness about the changing energy landscape and climate impacts.
Furthermore, the murals are the most recent part of the festival, following on from various shopping mall pop-ups, to the Let’s ACT at Home exhibition at the Building Centre in Ysterplaat and the Energy Efficiency Schools Programme’s play and workshop events at schools across the metro.
According to Limberg, ‘Our Shared Energy Future’, the City’s Energy Strategy, sets out their 2050 vision of energy security for a prosperous Cape Town. This vision is guided by the principles of reliability, affordability, carbon neutrality over time and resilience. And since then, they have been working hard to drive energy security and enable the uptake of sustainable energy. This programme of action commits to harness new energy supply, alleviate energy poverty and optimise energy use.
