South Africa is investing in the leaders who will shape future of Western Cape with Wesgro. It is the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, marketing the destination at global level.
As they say, great organisations are built by people and develop the next generation of leaders, is an investment in Wesgro and the Western Cape’s future. Following the launch of the Wesgro Leadership Development Series, the first cohort completed the First Line Leaders Programme at the UCT Graduate School of Business.
The programme clearly supports the development of Wesgro’s Leadership Pipeline, with a focus on Managing Self to Managing Others. This is an important transition from delivering results personally to achieving results through others, through effective delegation, coaching and team enablement.
Across three immersive days, participants explored self-awareness and leadership identity, management competencies, communication, influence and the role of the leader in enabling others to succeed.
However, the experience was described as transformative, thought-provoking and immediately applicable. It left participants feeling more intentional about their own growth as a leader. It also gave various opportunities to them to reflect on who they are as a leader and how they can show up in a way that adds the most value. For them, it was fun and the programme increased the level of confidence in managing people.
Beyond the formal learning, the programme created an opportunity for colleagues from across Wesgro to connect and learn from different leadership styles by strengthening relationships across teams. As one participant reflected, it was a great opportunity to “build team morale and see our core values in action.” Being at UCT GSB was another highlight of the experience, and they thanked the faculty and facilitators for creating an engaging and meaningful learning environment.
The real measure of this investment starts now; in leaders who delegate with clarity, coach with purpose, communicate with intention and create the conditions for their teams to thrive.
