Africa: Africa Weather Forecast launched its weekly summary (17 April – 23 April 2023); as per African weather reports, the upcoming week’s weather is expected to be dry and cold during the mornings, followed by warm to hot temperatures across most parts of the country for the majority of the week.

Strong winds and scattered showers and thundershowers are anticipated in the west on Thursday, with the system shifting east and into the central interior on Friday and during the weekend.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are likely to be dry, with little to no precipitation over the country. During this time, hot daytime temperatures are expected in the west and central interior. On Wednesday, there’s a very low chance of isolated thunderstorms in the central Cape interior.

From Wednesday night to Thursday, an upper air low will move down through the Cape interior, leading to a high probability of light rainfall and scattered thunderstorms in the far west and Cape interior on Thursday. On Thursday, there is also a low chance of high-impact thunderstorms with hail and strong winds over the central Cape interior.

On Thursday, scattered thunderstorms are highly likely in the west, mostly precipitating light showers but moderate in the far southwest near Citrusdal. Wind speeds between 40-50km/h are expected over the Cape interior, including the Free State and North West, with weaker winds (20-30km/hr) in southern Gauteng and western KwaZulu-Natal.

On Friday, there’s some uncertainty regarding the expected rainfall. While some models predict rainfall in the east after the recent system passes through the country, others suggest continuous showers and thundershowers in the south and western regions of the country.

Nevertheless, the showers and thundershowers are likely over western KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Free State on Friday, with a medium chance of strong NW winds gusting at 40km/h over the Eastern Cape and eastern Highveld.

Throughout the weekend, partly cloudy skies are expected over the coastal provinces, with a moderate chance of light rainfall, while clear skies will return to most of the interior. On Sunday, a cold front is expected to bring light rainfall to the southwest, preceded by strong northwest winds over the Cape interior around midday.
