Botswana, Palapye: The National Planning Commission, in partnership with the Botswana University of Science and Technology (BIUST), hosted the inaugural Vision 2036 Public Lecture in Palapye on 7 September yesterday. The discourse was held under the theme “The Case of BIUST: Transitional Development Plan (TNDP) – Contribution Towards Innovation and Digital Transformation”.
When addressing the participants, the Minister for State President, Kabo Neale Sechele Morwaeng, noted that the theme recognizes the role of BIUST in the delivery of the Vision, which is the national roadmap, through innovation and digital transformation.
He added that the theme also challenges the University to accelerate its efforts in research, innovation and creativity to contribute towards the achievement of the TNDP.
State President Morwaeng stated that BIUST was established as one of the key drivers of transformation for Botswana through research, science, technology and innovation.
“The use of science, technology and innovation to propel economies to high levels of efficiency is key to supporting socio-economic development”, said Minister Kabo Neale Sechele Morwaeng.
State President Morwaeng further narrated that for Botswana to achieve the desired transformation and value addition through quality research & development, BIUST is the right University to accomplish that. He added that for the nation to attain a high-income status with a diversified economy that is export-led and knowledge based, expectations are also on the success of science and technology universities.
The public lecture was held prior to the Vision 2036 Commemoration scheduled to be held on the 14th of September 2023 in Charleshill. The theme for the commemoration will be “Tebelopele ya 2036: A re Chencheng; le wena tsaya karolo”.
He cited that going forward, the Vision 2036 Commemoration will be an annual event every September, with a view to apprise the nation of the Vision’s progress as well as to appreciate challenges, if any. “It is time to introspect and reflect on our respective roles for the delivery of the national Vision,” he added.
Minister Morwaeng further commended BIUST on its achievements in producing industrious students who have demonstrated resilience in their work. The Minister concluded by emphasizing the importance of a progressive mindset. He urged Batswana to lock their minds on positivity and progress and close out negativity.
