Gaborone, Botswana: South East District Agriculture Officers held wellness activity under the theme: Health, Key to improved productivity.

Speaking at the event Gaborone City Mayor Austin Abraham said event is aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and help to build the team among staff members.

Amongst the district which turned up at Sebele are Gamalete and Tlokweng Agriculture District Officers.

The City Mayor noted that wellness activities also improve staff morale and help to break the visible and invisible silos that continue to hamper service delivery.

His Worship Abraham pointed out that Technologies such as computers and cellphones have been developed for convenience in the workplace, however, they have brought other adverse effects to human health.

He stressed that this developments make employees not to move most of the time as they perform most of their duties seated. The Mayor pointed out technical advancements also contributes to various health disorders leading to an increase in lifestyle diseases such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes and other.

His Worship stressed that wellness is defined as a healthy balance of the body, the mind and the spirit that results in a holistic feeling of wellbeing. He urged Ministry of Agriculture officials to continue with efforts to promote wellness which is part of their commitment to embrace safety and health in the work place.

Acting District Agriculture Coordinator for Tlokweng, Mr. John Mokgethi applauded the Government for allowing initiatives such as wellness day to take place at the workplace. Mr. Mokgethi said such activities help government employees to have a chance to exercise especially those who spend most of their most of their time sitting in offices.

He encouraged everyone to take exercise seriously and participate fully as it is a way to a healthy living. Mr. Mokgethi recognized all health institutions that made it to the event pointing out that it shows how much they prioritize good health.

There were also presentations from Botswana Narcotics Division, Dental Care and District Health Management Team – Mental health.
