Botswana: Team Botswana arrived back home after an outstanding performance at the just ended AUSC Region 5 Games, which were held in Malawi.

Speaking at the welcome ceremony held yesterday at Travel Lodge in Gaborone, MYSC Assistant Minister Honest Buti Billy shared that the team that left a fortnight ago represented Botswana with dignity and raised the flag high.” He added that he was in attendance at Lilongwe and was pleased with their performance.

“Indeed, we appreciate that the absence of sport at schools has an impact on your performance, and with that, I want to assure Batswana that MYSC is working hard to ensure a programme that will cover both school going and out of school athletes is implemented for early 2023.

Minister Billy acknowledged that the AUSC games provide much needed exposure to young athletes as they prepare for the upcoming Africa Games in 2023 and other international competitions.

“The experience gained at these games will come in handy as some of you will be looking towards qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

Minister Billy said the Government of Botswana is committed to supporting athletes’ efforts and implored the Private Sector to join hands in this endeavour. He stated that sport is an industry that has the potential to diversify the economy through employment creation and sports tourism and such, so it is worth investing in.

He encouraged coaches, managers and other support staff to continue doing a good job, as their efforts and the time spent volunteering to serve sport are well appreciated.
