Botswana: Botswana Police Service Diamond and Minerals Protection Unit (DMPU) personnel have donated new school shoes and socks to students. The donation amounting over P9,000.00 was used to help more than 67 less privileged students at Medie Primary School in Kweneng District.

The donation exercise was hosted on Saturday, with the members of the Botswana Police Service Diamond and Minerals Protection Unit (DMPU) in attendance. The Director of Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mokuedi Mphathi spoke at the ceremony.

He highlighted that the donation would positively change the lives of the students in the community. The initiative can help in restoring the dignity of these students and help improve their academic performance.

He further said the donations will strengthen the existing partnership between the Police and the community. Over the years, the partnership between the two organizations has helped in the fight against crime and other social ills.

On the other hand, Medie Primary School Head Johnson Madile also appreciated the Police Service for the donation. He recollected that the initiative will give many students from financially weak households some resources they need.

He appreciated Police Officers for their noble gesture of donating items worth over P9,000 for the students of their school. He also added that the donations came at an opportune time when the students needed them the most.

He later noted that as the winter season has begun, shoes and socks are necessities for learners to keep warm and concentrate during their studies. He further urged learners to care for their gifts by constantly cleaning and polishing them.

Kgosi Moatlhodi Kgabo of Medie, encouraged Police Officers to continue giving back to other needy members of the public, saying blessed is the hand that gives rather than the one that takes.

He appealed to the Botswana Police Service to consider setting up a Police Post in Medie to fight escalating crime in his area. He said they rely on Lentsweletau Police Post for assistance, and the long distance between the two areas makes it difficult for them to promptly receive police assistance.

The event was held under the theme, ‘Building a Better Tomorrow; Embracing Social Responsibility.’
