The Zambia Ministry of Health has handed over various cleaning materials and personal protective equipment to Busaka Mumalikechi Ne Mustation women group. The group has been working for the prevention of cholera in the district of Lusaka. The move was made in a bid to prevent the rise of Cholera cases in the country and facilitate the cleaning of 12 markets in Lusaka.
Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima who officiated during the handover ceremony at Ndeke House grounds said the Ministry has been working tirelessly to combat the Cholera outbreak which has since been put under control.
The Health Minister has revealed that the country has not recorded any new Cholera cases in the last 4 days. He also mentioned that his Ministry treated 17 patients through the Cholera treatment centres in Nakonde district with no death recorded and that all 17 patients have been discharged.
Dr. Muchima stated that Nakonde and the rest of the country remain on high alert for disease outbreak or spread into new areas. He further highlighted that oral Cholera vaccinations have commenced targeting high risk populations of Nakonde district.
Dr. Muchima said the Ministry of Health is partnering with the Busaka Mumalikechi Ne Mustation women group and other stakeholders to support the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in cleaning as they clean up the city of Lusaka.
Furthermore, Chairperson for Busakamumalikechi Ne Mu station women group Mirriam Masando commended the Government for shutting down the illegal Kalunga steel market due to its poor sanitation conditions and showing interest in listening to the pleas of the marketeers.
The donated items include 1 Water Tank, 400 shovels, 400 Rakes, 400 Hard Brooms, 200 wheelbarrows, 120 Rubber Brooms, 950 Dust Coats, 1,100 Work Suits, 800 Reflector Jackets, 350 Toilet Brushes, 3,000 Helmet,900 Gumboots, 5,000 Face Masks, 3,000 Heavy duty Gloves and 800 Bottles of Liquid Hand washing Soap.
They are to be distributed to BH, New Soweto, Old Soweto, CBD, Kulima Tower, Millennium, Intercity, Lumumba, Cha Cha Cha, COMESA, Chibolya, Mobil and Kamwala Markets.
