Cape Town Air breaks records and reaches new heights as Cape Town International Airport surpasses 10 million passengers in year 2024. The Cape Town Air marks great milestone and celebrates the achievement.
According to the statistics of the Airport Company South Africa, Cape Town International Airport has set a new record and welcomed nearly 3.1 million two-way international passengers in 2024.
It surpassed the 3 million mark for the first time. This achievement reflects 10% increase as compared to 2023 and marks 24 consecutive months of growth in international passenger numbers since January 2023.
Around 10.4 million two-way passengers passed through the airport terminals in 2024 and marked a significant 7% increase compared to 2023 with the number of domestic two-way passengers increase by 6%.
CEO of Wesgro and official spokesperson of Cape Town Air Access – Wrenelle Stander said that this achievement is a testament to the strength of the partnership made with ACSA, South African Tourism, the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism as well as private sector partners comprising of V&A Waterfront, Investec and DHL.
It demonstrated the attractiveness of the Western Cape as a global destination for both business and leisure travel. She stated that they are committed to expand connectivity to the destination, further helping in bringing the world to Cape Town and the Western Cape.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth and Tourism – Alderman James Vos said that the Western Cape’s roust aviation sector plays a critical role in driving the economic development.
The sustained growth at Cape Town International Airport demonstrates the resilience of the economy and the value of collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders. Together, they have ensured that the region remains competitive on the global stage.
Looking forward, the airport is set to maintain the excellent results in 2025 with several developments set to further boost passenger numbers. Earlier, this month flagship Dutch Airline KLM increased its frequency from 7 to 10 flights per week between Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Cape Town until March 2025.
Additionally, the Air France will extend its operational season between Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Cape Town until the end of April 2025. The British Airways will enhance its services by increasing its frequency to three daily flights between London Heathrow and Cape Town until the end of March 2025.
Norse Atlantic Airways has launched its inaugural flight to Cape Town in 2024 and will now operate the flights between London Gatwick and Cape Town until the end of April 2025.
The regional connectivity will also see a significant boost with both Air Botswana and Airlink increasing the capacity on flights between Gaborone and Cape Town beginning April 01, 2025. Moreover, Air Botswana will introduce new routes from Maun and Kasane to Cape Town.
Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism for Western Cape – Dr. Ivan Meyer said that this surge in connectivity directly supports the tourism sector that remains a cornerstone of job creation and economic development across the province.
According to Meyer, the extended operating seasons and increased flight frequencies form key markets such as Europe, the UK and Botswana will ensure even more opportunities for travellers to experience the diverse offerings of the Western Cape.
Meyer added that these developments present an opportunity for sustained growth of the tourism economy, while benefiting the local businesses, communities and the people of the Western Cape.
