Cape Town: The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town hosted a vibrant, water safety celebration at the Long Street Indoor Swimming Pool, on the final day of the school holidays. The event was commemorated as a part of the city build-up to World Drowning Prevention Day, which is observed internationally on July 25, 2025.
Despite a light drizzle, dozens of children and their guardians arrived eagerly to participate in a day of education and fun. The historic indoor pool, Cape Town’s oldest one, provided a warm and welcoming venue where lifesaving skills could be learned safely and joyfully.
The City of Cape Town lifeguards were front and centre throughout the morning, and led interactive demonstrations, while guiding children through hands-on activities that taught essential water safety behavior. There were all signs of growing water awareness such as kicking with kickboards, confident splashing with pool noodles, breathing and blowing bubble techniques.
Furthermore, the event featured a static display of lifesaving equipment, including vessels, giving participants a closer look at the tools of lifeguards that are used to keep swimmers safe.
The major highlight of the day was the introduction of the ‘Golden Rules for Water Safety’. It was a set of simple, memorable guidelines designed to help children, and their caregivers stay safe in and around the water.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that while this may seem like just a fun day at the pool, what they saw here was learning in action.
Higham added that through their Drowning Prevention Programme, they are giving families life-saving knowledge that helps in building a safer and more resilient Cape Town. She said, “I commend our incredible lifeguards and staff for making this event possible and ensuring that all our residents and visitors can safely enjoy our pool facilities and beaches.”
The City of Cape Town recognized active and engaged communities that are key to drowning prevention by encouraging vigilance, awareness and shared responsibility. Also, they are working towards a safer and healthier environment for everyone.
Local Ward Councillor – Ian McMahon (for Ward 115) said that for the safety of everyone who uses the public pools, it is vital to teach life skills and swimming, which is one of the most important skill.
Events like this encourage parents and guardians to prioritize water safety and ensure their children are confident around the water. That’s something they want to see more of across all the communities.
However, this is for the first time that the City of Cape Town has formally marked World Drowning Prevention Day at a municipal swimming facility, using it to spotlight its Drowning Prevention Programme and the year-round work done by Recreation and Parks.
Notably, the event also previews the upcoming lifeguard assessment taking place at the same venue in preparation for the busy summer season. With free access provided to participants and a programme centred on guardians and children learning together, the day was a strong reminder that building a culture of safety starts early.
