Cape Town: Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis recognised the Elsies River tenants who paid their way. The City of Cape Town recognised 50 of its senior Community Residential Unit (CRU) tenants who have consistently paid for their rent over the past few years, for setting such a great example to the younger generations and especially the ones who are not paying their way, which impacts the income required for maintenance.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and the Memebr of Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim were in Elsies River to honour the residents who are an important part of the public housing success. The rental income is how the City of Cape Town can repair and maintain these units.
Considering this, Councillor Carl Pophaim said that the city held a special celebration in honour of 50 outstanding senior residents who have consistently paid their rent over the past few years, they certainly are leading by example and showing how they can do all the bit to help, no matter what how big or small the contribution is, as long as they contribute.

They celebrated and recognised the loyal tenants for their commitment and contribution. As the senior residents are often the loyal tenants who consistently pay their rentals. However, without that income, the City of Cape Town is unable to properly maintain the units.
They would like to see a renewed culture of payment among the tenants, especially the younger generation. With this rental income that they receive from the tenants, they are able to repair and maintain the housing units.
They have more than 39,000 tenants and their families who live in the units and they want to improve the conditions. The Public Housing Department of the City of Cape Town is investing in maintenance and repairs of more than R1.2 billion over the next few years.

Pophaim added that they will always encourage the tenants to make their rental payments. It is important that rental is paid regularly, in full and on time each month. There are a number of ways by how tenants can pay.
They encouraged them to make use of the convenient online options. If tenants are not able to pay, they reminded them that there is help available and they are encouraged to approach them. Councillor Pophaim thanked the tenants for their continued support.
