The City of Cape Town has commissioned a new signalised intersection at the junction of Old Oak Road and Melina Street. This marked another step towards improving road safety and traffic management in one of the area’s busiest transport corridors.
Reportedly, the new traffic signals were officially unveiled on June 30, 2026 during a site visit by the City’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas and Ward Councillor – Hendri Terblanche. They were joined by officials from the City’s Transport Planning and Network Management Department.
The installation forms part of a Service Agreement between the City and the WCB Group, which is currently developing a residential apartment project adjacent to Old Oak Road near Melina Street. In addition to the traffic signals, new road signs have also been installed to support the safe operation of the upgraded intersection.
According to the City of Cape Town, the signalised intersection has been introduced to accommodate the increased traffic expected from the nearby residential development while addressing longstanding road safety concerns raised by local residents. The intersection is located along a heavily trafficked route that experiences significant vehicle movement throughout the day.
During the site visit, Councillor Rob Quintas said that the new traffic lights would improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians by providing a more controlled crossing point. He said that they welcome the new signalised intersection. This is a busy corridor that carries significant volumes of traffic throughout the day.
Earlier, residents have raised concerns about the challenges pedestrians and motorists face when trying to cross Old Oak Road safely from Melina Street. The installation of these new traffic lights will therefore provide a much safer and more controlled crossing opportunity for pedestrians, while also improve traffic flow and safety for all road users, stated Quintas.
According to Cllr Quintas, service agreements between the City and private developers play an important role in ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with urban growth while enhancing public safety. The service agreements alike these, demonstrate the City’s commitment to create safer, more accessible streets for the communities, which helps to keep Cape Town move safely.
The City noted that the upgraded intersection is expected to ease traffic movement, improve pedestrian accessibility and support future growth in the area. The project reflects Cape Town’s continued investment in transport infrastructure that aims at creating safer, more efficient road networks while ensuring that new developments are supported by the necessary public infrastructure.
