Cape Town: The Prepaid Electricity Meter Testing Laboratory of the City of Cape Town is considered as a leading testing facility where all city prepaid meters are tested for accuracy before getting installed in the homes of residents. The city tests every single prepaid electricity meter before its installation and it has more than 600,000 prepaid electricity meters, installed within the metro.
Considering the power precision, the cutting-edge meter testing facility sets a great standard and electricity meters are the property of the City of Cape Town.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Energy – Alderman Xanthea Limberg has met energy teams at the meter testing laboratory of the city to take a closer look at how prepaid meters are tested before they are installed in the homes of city customers.
However, all city prepaid electricity meters are supplied and installed by the city conform to National Standards and are tested by both the manufacturers and the city against stringent calibration standards.
Alderman Xanthea Limberg said that thorough testing is the lynchpin of the electricity metering strategy, ensuring residents and businesses that receive accurate meter readings, that they pay for the exact amount of power tat they use, in line with council-approved tariffs.

The City of Cape Town is a proud leader in precision metering and they are one of a few municipalities in the country to have a testing facility. She mentioned that the facility tests every single electricity meter for accuracy and performance before it is installed in the homes of residents.
Testing ensured the residents who are consuming electricity accurately and that the meters meet all the required reliability and safety standards. It is important for the residents to note that some areas in the metro are supplied with electricity directly by Eskom and others by the city Cape Town.
City of Cape Town is only responsible for prepaid electricity meters in its supply areas. This is not something which is determined by the city but is considered under the national legislation.
Limberg marked that currently they have more than 600,000 prepaid electricity meters in use, in the metro and the meter testing laboratory plays a critical role in ensuring that the meters are in the best working order.
