City of Cape Town welcomes thousands of participants every year for Fitness Programme ‘Spring into Fitness’ that conducts activities such as group aerobics, walking groups and dance, while catering to different interests and fitness levels.

The Recreation and Parks Department of the Cape Town managed 3,571 parks, 13 regional parks, 180 indoor centres and 167 sports fields. By ensuring the access for communities, the department also hosted a series of programmes that catered to different age groups.

Reportedly, the Fitness Programme sees a high participation rate among women, out of which many of them attended it consistently and boosted their fitness levels in the process.

Last year, the participation rate reached to 37,000 in fitness programmes, with step aerobics and high-energy dance sessions among the most popular activities.

Natalie February from Eastridge in Mitchells Plain attended the seniors’ fitness programme at Tafelsig Community Centre. She started her fitness journey in the year 2010 as a way to manage her high cholesterol.

Referring to this, February narrated, “I find it energising to move and not just sit at home, doing nothing all the time. Fitness is not about age and we celebrate people of all ages. So come on down and join us.”

February’s story is a testament to how these programmes have empowered the individuals to take care of their health, while staying active and engaged in their communities.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that these programmes go beyond improving the physical fitness, as they also created welcoming spaces for social connection and community building, by positively impacting the lives of everyone which were involved.

According to Ross, Women are the backbone of the communities and it’s wonderful to see them leading the way in these initiatives.

“As we transition from Women’s Month into the ‘Spring into Fitness’, it’s inspiring to witness the dedication and energy that these women bring to their workouts, and also to their communities,” said Van der Ross.

The commitment by these women enhances their own well-being but and also sets a powerful example for others to follow. Whether one is a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just a beginner who has started its wellness journey, the programmes offer something, which is well and good for everyone.
