Zambia: A three year old boy of Chifunabuli District in Luapula Province is heavily injured after a 240 litters drum filled with chibuku beer rolled over him. The incident happened on Tuesday when a 26 year old was rolling the said drum of beer.
The incident was reported to the police by the mother of the victim, who has been identified as Catherine Kasongo. The mother of the victim confirmed that the 26 year old man identified as Geoffrey Kunda of Ntolele Village in Chief Chitembo’s Chiefdom.
The police force has shared that the investigation into the matter has been ongoing. The Chifunabuli District Commissioner Stanley Mukosa confirmed the incident with the media.
According to the Police officer, the incident happened on Tuesday at Chifunabuli harbor at approximately 12 hours on Tuesday. Further, Mukosa revealed that the mother in the company of her child went to buy fish at the harbor.
At this point, the mother was busy in a conversation with her neighbor who was also in the company of her young brother. The officials revealed that when they were talking, the mother saw a drum rolling down from the higher ground.
The drum of bear was heading towards the lake and the market was crowded by the patrons who were conducting business.
The drum was heading towards her friends’ young brother who managed to grab it but that she did not see the second drum which in turn rolled over her child.
The District Commissioner Stanley Mukosa said the father to the minor identified as Chrispin Simukoko was also present at the market. He was at a distance saw the incident and quickly ran over and rushed the child to Lubwe Mission Hospital.
At the hospital, the doctors tried to resuscitate him however, the resuscitation failed as the victim was unconscious. The officials have shared that the boy was later referred to Mansa General Hospital for further treatment.
Commissioner Mukosa said that Kunda has since been arrested to assist in the investigation of the matter and the drum which rolled over the child is also in the custody of the Police.
